Magnesium is tough and lightweight which makes it an ideal choice for freshwater reels, but it corrodes easily if exposed to saltwater, therefore I would not recommend using a magnesium reel in saltwater since a tiny scratch in the protective finish would clear the way for saltwater to reach and consume the magnesium alloy
