چنانچہ قدم قدم پر ٹھوکریں کھائیں۔ لفظوں کے معنی تو لغت میں مل جاتے ہیں، مگر معنوں کی تہہ تک پہنچنا جان جوکھوں کا کام ہے۔ ہم نے برسوں کوشش کی مگر آخر کار تنگ آکر کام ادھورا چھوڑ دیا۔ جب اپنی تسلی ہی نہ ہو تو کسی اور کی سمع خراشی سے کیا حاصل۔ سوچا کہ فرانسیسی ایک خوبصورت کلاسیکی زبان ہے اور گیسوئے اُردو ابھی منّت پذیر شانہ ہے، ایسے میں اس قدر حساس ناول کا کامیاب ترجمہ کیوں کر ہو سکے گا اور اپنے عجز کا یہ عالم کہ ایک زبان پر قدرت ہے نہ دوسری پر۔ جوانی کے جوش میں خوامخواہ وہ کام شروع کر ڈالا جس سے اچھے بھلے استاد گھبرائیں۔مدتوں ترجمہ کا مسودہ میرے کاغذات میں پڑا رہا۔
