She was educated at Broughton Hall, Leyfield, Notre Dame Commercial and Notre Dame High School Mount Pleasant, Liverpool. She spent two years at Endsleigh Training College, Hull and a year at Liverpool University, gaining an Advanced Diploma in Education. She taught in primary schools for thirty years.
