Richard Stacey Maccrae Semple was born in Glengarry, Ontario. He had 2 years service with the 2nd Imperial Light Horse and served in South Africa during the Boer War, receiving the Queen's South Africa Medal. He served in France with the 19th Battalion and was discharged as medically unfit.
